Mr Daniel Dzakah, Western Regional MTTU Commander, has said the accident situation of the region worsened with 2012 having 1,013 accident statistics as against 915 in 2011.
The above reported cases involved 1,059 persons in 2012 and 1,171 persons in 2011 respectively.
He said the region also recorded 499 fatal crashes and 514 minor in the past year whiles in 2011 455 fatal crashes and 460 minor crashes were recorded.
The number of pedestrian knock downs included 142 in the last year as against 146 in 2011 adding that 208 males below age 18 were killed in 2012 whilst 40 females below age 18 also died in the same year, said Mr Dzakah.
The MTTU commander complained about the very bad road networks in the metropolis saying “we expect the authorities to do something about the roads because the potholes are too much”.
Mr Dzakah entreated the media to continue to complement the efforts of the Police and the NRSC in educating the public on road safety issues.
Alhaji Sumani Mbo, Western Regional Director of the NRSC, said road safety continued to be a shared responsibility among various transport unions, vehicle owners and the public as a whole.
He said the commission would continue to engage stakeholders at both the regional and district levels to help highlight the road safety concerns of the region.
The Commission has therefore put in place a work plan aimed at improving road safety management, ensuring safer roads and mobility, safety of vehicles, safety of road users and post crash response.
