The Techiman Municipality recorded 22 road accidents in the first quarter of 2013, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Andrews Kofi Okomengye, Techiman District Police Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), has said.
He said 43 vehicles were involved in the accidents which killed 17 people and wounded many.
ASP Okomengye said this at the launch of the Total Road Safety Caravan 2013 in Techiman.
The campaign, being spearheaded by the Total Petroleum Ghana Limited with support from the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), is aimed at helping to reduce road accidents on Kumasi-Techiman-Kintampo trunk road.
ASP Okomengye said 25 road crashes were recorded in the second quarter of the year which claimed 15 lives.
Superintendent of police Daniel Doh Nkaboare, Techiman Municipal Police Commander, expressed concern about unlicensed and unregistered motor bikes operating in the municipality.
He said he was optimistic that with the launch of the safety campaign, all stakeholders in the transport industry would support in road safety education.
Mr Agyabeng Mensah Aborampa, Brong-Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, appealed to drivers to avoid unnecessary overtaking and ensure that they undertake regular checks on their vehicles.
