Rioters at Aboakyer festival remanded

Agona Swedru (Central Rregion) – A circuit court at Agona Swedru on Tuesday remanded 30 people suspected to have rioted during the climax of the Aboakyer Festival at Winneba last Sunday.

Twelve others were granted bail in the sum of 10m cedis each with one surety to be justified. Their plea was not taken and they will re-appear in court on 20 May.

Prosecuting, DSP John Ackom, Swedru Divisional Crime Officer told the court that on that day, while Neeyi Ghartey, Omanhene of Effutu, was performing rituals at the shrine supporters of a rival faction also went to the shrine to perform rituals.

Ackom said the rioters threw stones and other objects at the police who managed to quell the riots and later arrested 42 of them
