Rice Millers Association donates items to KMA

Kumasi, Feb. 16, GNA -The Ashanti Regional branch of the Rice Millers Association under the Ghana Food Crop Processors Association on Friday donated some items valued 500 Ghana cedis to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in Kumasi.

The items which included five mini-bags of rice, one full bag each of dry cassava flour, corn flour and one bale of second-hand clothing were to support the upkeep and maintenance of some beggars, lunatics and the destitute rounded up by KMA recently.

Mr Oppong Ofori, National Chairman of the Ghana Food Crop Processors Association making the donation said it was done in response to an appeal made by the KMA for support to rehabilitate such people in society.

He said the donation was therefore, the association’s widow’s mite towards the upkeep and maintenance of such people.

The National Chairman said the donation was second of its kind to the KMA this year and pledged to donate five mini-bags of rice every month as its contributions towards the maintenance of the destitutes and others.

Mr Thomas Ekow Sackey, Assembly member for Asem Electoral Area in Kumasi described the contributions of the association to the KMA as laudable and stressed the need for individuals and organizations to assist the upkeep of needy people in society at all times. Mr Abraham Lawrence Antwi, Kumasi Metropolitan Environmental Officer and Chairman of the KMA Environmental Sub-Committee said the Assembly had plans to rehabilitate beggars, lunatics and destitute in the Kumasi Metropolis to ensure the beauty of the Metropolis.

He said such responsibility needed the support and assistance of cooperate bodies, philanthropists and churches and appealed to them to donate generously towards the rehabilitation of such people to ensure their safety.

The Metropolitan Environmental Officer disclosed that some market women associations and Eggs Sellers Association at Asafo market in Kumasi had donated some items including vegetables, yams, plantain, cassava and crates of eggs to the destitute.
