A section of the Youth of the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency, has given President John Evans Atta Mills, a two-week ultimatum to revoke the appointment of Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, as the Greater-Accra Regional Minister designate, or they would embark on a series of demonstrations.
Nii Laryea, who is the Member of Parliament for the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency and a Minister of State at the Presidency, was nominated for appointment by President Mills as the Greater-Accra Regional Minister on March 6, 2012.
Mr. Simon Nii Teye Nartey, Spokesperson for the agitated Youth, gave the ultimatum on Thursday at a Press Conference at Ashaiman-Tulaku.
Mr. Nartey said even though they recognized that it was the constitutional mandate of the President to appoint people for positions, it must be done in the interest of majority of the people.
He alleged that Nii Agbo had failed woefully as MP for the constituency, and his appointment would only worsen his inability to perform satisfactorily.
The spokesperson further stated that the constituency could not boast of security, employment, High School, water, hospital, and good roads as well as public toilets, among other amenities.
He indicated that the MP’s achievements were not impressive to merit a reward of being appointed the Regional Minister.
“Kpone-Katamanso is fed up with Nii Laryea, his appointment would only add up to the bad policies of the NDC”, he added.
Mr. Charles Dubin, Assembly Member for Sebrepor Electoral Area, challenged the Kpone-Katamanso MP to account for what he used his share of the Common Fund for in the constituency.
Mr. Dubin added that all the road networks under construction in the constituency were the handiwork of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) “not Nii Laryea as he is bragging about”.
He further indicated that the MP did not even know the source of funding for those projects, since according to him, Nii Agbo never attended Assembly meetings.
“Nii Laryea, as an MP, is a disaster and, therefore, does not deserve the position of a Greater-Accra Regional Minister.”**
