Tamale, Nov. 19, GNA- The Northern Network for Education Development (NNED), a civil society Organisation in Tamale, has appealed to the government to review some portions of the Education Bill currently before Parliament before it was passed into law.
The NNED said the bill suggests that District Assemblies should use their share of the common fund to finance education of pupils in the primary and middle schools.
“But the over reliance on the assemblies for the provision of school infrastructure is detrimental to educational development in the country”, he said.
This was contained in a Memorandum to the government copied to the media and other stakeholders in education.
The NNED suggested that the government should provide the infrastructure and to ensure financial disbursement to the Assemblies. The memoranda commended the government for initiating the establishment of community colleges and universities but expressed fear that if the private sector was to lead in this process Northern Ghana might suffer in terms of education.
The NNED also proposed the creation of regional education councils with representation from the regional Coordinating council.
It further called for expansion of Education Service Council to include NGOs, Traditional rulers and other civil society organizations.
