Awutu-Bawjiase(C/R), May 21, GNA – A member of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly, Mr Isaac Abbey, has described the current system where the Assembly used only a day or two to deliberate on issues brought before it, as woefully inadequate.
He called for re-adoption of the old system during, which members spent between three and four days to discuss matters.
Mr Abbey was contributing to a discussion on the role of District Assembly Members and Community Development organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) at Awutu-Bawjiase on Friday. He said for the Assembly to work satisfactorily, it had to take time to “digest” matters that affected the communities as their representatives to ensure effective solutions and development. Mr Abbey stated that the Assembly reached and implemented a lot of concrete decisions when it was practicing the four-day continuous session.
He said that since the system was changed the Assembly had not been able to discharge its functions creditably. “We cannot use only a day or two to deliberate upon the numerous problems facing the various communities in the 42 electoral areas in the district,” the Assembly Member stated.
