Retrieve weapons in wrong hands

The Government has been advised to take stringent measures to retrieve the sophisticated arms used to train some individuals who were members of the Committee for the Defence of the Revolution (CDRs) during the PNDC era.

This will go a long way to stem the recent spate of armed robberies in the country, the Times reports.

Assistant Superintendent of Police A. Awuni, Head of the Police Public Relations Unit told the paper in Kumasi that he was of the view that some CDRs members who fell out of favour and were dismissed did not have their arms taken from them.

“Although some of the weapons used in the robberies were locally made, majority of them are the sophisticated one used to train the CDRs, such as the AK 47 assault rifles and pistols,” he said. ASP Awuni suggested that an ‘Amnesty Committee’ should be set up to encourage people who possess weapons to surrender them on their own volition without fear of being prosecuted, explaining that some of those people might be willing to hand the weapons over but feared they would be prosecuted.
