Residents asked to keep the environment clean

Kumasi, Sept. 10, GNA – The Very Reverend Francis Kweku Andoh, Superintendent Minister of the New Tafo circuit of the Methodist Church has called on residents in the Kumasi metropolis to help rid the city of filth.

He said the current environmental situation in the metropolis was not only an eyesore but it could lead to the outbreak of an epidemic when the rains start.

The Very Rev Andoh was speaking to newsmen after members of the circuit had undertaken a four-hour clean-up exercise at the Bolga-Bawku lorry park and the New Tafo market in Kumasi on Saturday. The exercise formed part of the activities of the circuit to mark the 170th anniversary of Methodism in Ghana and the over 500 members of the church who took part in the exercise swept open spaces, desilted gutters and cleared rubbish.

Other activities of the weeklong celebration of the anniversary, which is on the theme, “Making Disciples In All Nation”, included a talk of the history of Methodism in Ghana and symposium on church finances, social evangelism and church planting.

Very Rev Andoh said the church decided to embark on the exercise as its contribution to the promotion of good sanitation in the area. He said the exercise was also to sensitise the people on the need to observe environmental cleanliness not only in their homes but wherever they found themselves.

The circuit which comprises 11 societies with Dunwell Methodist Church at Dichemso as mother society presented 1.2 million cedis to the New Tafo Town Council to purchase street bulbs and wheelbarrows to support its development programmes.
