Madam Rosemond Abrah, Member of Parliament for Weija/Gbawe in Accra, has appealed to Government to as a matter of urgency raise tents at safer spots in Dansoman for displaced residents of Wiaboman.
She also suggested that the Government should consider settling the people of Wiaboman elsewhere in future.
Madam Abrah made the appeal in a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday.
“The heavy rains which submerged over 400 houses in Wiaboman is so life threatening.
“I am appealing to Government to immediately raise tents at safer spots in Dansoman for the displaced residents of Wiaboman and maybe in the near future, the Government should consider resettling the people of Wiaboman elsewhere,” Madam Abrah said.
Giving a background of the community, the MP said Wiaboman is an outlying community behind the Panbros Salt Industry in the Weija/ Gbawe constituency, and shares boundary on the coast with Glefe, an adjoining community in Dansoman.
It is usually affected with any onset of heavy rains, the MP noted, and requested to know the outcome of a report of the flooding situation, due to the wrong sitting of a Total Filling Station at Mallam Junction.
Madam Abrah noted that recent developments by Chinese companies and others who put up industrial and commercial buildings at the swampy areas of Mallam Junction by filling their sites with sand, had aggravated the matter.
On the proposed solutions in the reports, she asked: “Has the redesigning of the horizontal alignment of the drainage system at Mallam Junction been done?
“There was a proposal to fix six bigger culverts upstream, that a big underground drain would be constructed across the Total Fuel Station;
“Mr Speaker, what had been the outcome of this report since November 2010?” Madam Abrah asked.
She noted that the flooding at GICEL is equally devastating; adding that, the area needs bigger culverts and storm drains to convey the heavy rain waters from Bortianor, a suburb in the area.
“The action is urgent and now,” Madam Abrah said, adding “River Korkordjor needs to be dredged immediately.”
