Kumasi A consortium of researchers and poultry scientists are currently researching into the possibility of replacing maize with cassava and cocoa husks as components of poultry feed. This will help reduce the high cost of feed and thus increase poultry production in the country. Mr Mike Acheampong, Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, who stated this at a seminar organized by the World Poultry Science Association, Ghana Branch, said the research is an attempt by the livestock sub-sector of the MOFA to find a substitute for maize the high cost of which affects the cost of poultry feed as it forms a decisive input in poultry production. Mr Acheampong said while agriculture accounted for 45 per cent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 65 per cent of employment, the livestock sector contributed only nine per cent, while the poultry industry operated at half capacity, a situation which affects the protein needs of the growing population.
