Antibodies that could stop the HIV virus have been found in breast milk by researchers at the Duke University Medical Center in the United States, Mr. Abu Mahama, Western Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission said on Wednesday.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Sekondi, he said the researchers have isolated the antibodies from immune cells called B cells, in the breast milk of infected mothers at Malawi.
Mr Mahama said this shows that B cells in breast milk can generate neutralizing antibodies that could inhibit the virus that causes AIDS.
He said a vaccine to prevent HIV would be produced when the research is finalized.
Mr. Mahama cautioned the public against using herbal medicine to cure HIV because there is no scientific proof of this and advised those living with the disease to seek medical treatment.**
