Accra, April 19, GNA – The Ghana Health Service on Wednesday said there had been some reported cases of cholera in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
A statement signed by Dr Edward Antwi for the Regional Director of Health Services, said although the disease was effectively controlled during an outbreak from September to December 2005, the threat still persisted with the onset of the rains.
The Regional Directorate of Health Services, therefore, advised persons who experienced frequent loose watery stools and vomiting to visit the nearest Government hospital for free medical treatment. “All government health facilities in the regions are resourced to handle cholera cases”, the statement said.
The statement advised for the maintenance of personal and environmental hygiene and the adoption of preventive measures such as washing of hands with soap and water before eating and after using the toilet and washing of all fruits and vegetables before consumption. Food and water should be covered to keep flies way; food eaten whilst hot or warm; disposal of toilet and other waste should be done properly and people should avoid the buying of foods that were cold and exposed to dust and flies.
