Replace old cables to avoid fire outbreaks, director

Tema (Greater Accra), 15 March ’99 —

Mr Emmanuel Ofoe, Tema Municipal Co-ordinating Director on Saturday called for the periodic change of electrical cables in homes and offices to help check the frequent fire outbreaks caused by electrical faults. He noted that most cables have not been changed since their installation in the 1950s, and this posed a great threat to lives and properties. Mr Ofoe was speaking at the presentation of relief items by the Tema branch of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to Madam Cecilia Addy, a house wife of Tema whose house was razed down by fire last year November. The items were two packets of roofing sheets,a bag of rice, mattresses, blankets, plastic plates, cups and buckets. Madam Addy who is in her sixties was virtually left with nothing as the Fire which lasted for about 30 minutes destroyed her all property. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
