Accra, Sept 9, GNA – A solemn memorial service was held at the Chancery of the US Embassy in Accra this afternoon to mark the fourth anniversary of the September 11 attacks four years ago when terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon killed nearly 3,000 people from all over the world.
A moment of silence was observed for the victims. The Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy, Jerry Lanier, paid tribute to the victims and heroes of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 after the lowering of the American flag by officers of the US Marines. A statement from the US Embassy said Mr Lanier remarked, “Despite the attack on our lives and our values four years ago, we are here today standing together. We are not trying to forget — rather we are making certain we remember what happened.
“And we will not give up in our efforts to move forward. We will continue to work together for what we both believe in, and we will not surrender to terrorism.”
He expressed his admiration for the leadership of both the US and Ghana saying, “As the leader of the U.S. Mission in Ghana at this time, I again want to express my admiration and respect for the leadership of both our countries.”
He said, ” we will continue to do everything we can to prevent events of this type from happening again, and that we will continue to try to construct a world where everyone is free from violence, hunger, and oppression.
“We must reaffirm that what unites us as free people, seeking justice, progress, and opportunity, will always be greater than what might divide us by nationality, race, or religion”.
