Reintroduce agriculture in SHS – Lecturer

In line with the government’s policy to create jobs for the youth, a Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Department of Agriculture Engineering, Dr. Ernest Teye has appealed to the government to as matter of urgency restore agriculture as a core subject in the second cycle institutions

This, he explained would help the government to tackle youth unemployment in the country and help boost the sector.

At the 20th Biennial Conference of the Ghana Society of Animal Production (GSAP) under the theme “Positioning the animal industry to achieve food security of stakeholders,” Dr. Teye indicated that if students learn agriculture they will be able to engage in it themselves.

“Bringing back Agriculture as a core subject in second cycle institutions is the underlining word for creating jobs and solving unemployment situation because if you put one maize down you will get over 200 so Agriculture should be practically oriented” Dr. Teye reinforced.

He observed that a lot of people on retirement rather go back to agriculture by doing animal farming underscoring the need for students at the secondary level to it earlier than waiting until retirement.
