Rehabilitation of Nkawkaw-New Abirem road on course

Work is progressing steadily on the 36.2 kilometre Nkawkaw-New Abirem road, bringing a sigh of relief to drivers and commuters along the stretch.

The construction work is being funded by Ghana Cocoa Board as part of the cocoa roads project being undertaken in the Eastern Region and across the country.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Abirem, Mrs Eunice Manfo, the Chief Executive Officer of Hugo-Terrano, the company executing the project, said it was originally scheduled to be completed in 24 months but it was the company’s hope to complete it by the end of October this year. Thirty per cent of the work is complete.

She said because of the heavy duty trucks that plied the road its original design was being upgraded to have a solid foundation to be able to stand the test of time.

Mrs Manfo said the company was working on the crash rock base but would do two additional seals to the primer seals to ensure quality work.

She expressed appreciation to the communities and all stakeholders for their support.

The Nkawkaw-Abirem road has deteriorated and one had to spend more than two hours to make the about 30minutes journey from Nkawkaw to Abirem. As a result most drivers refused to ply the road due to the damage it caused to their vehicles.

Some drivers who ply the road told the GNA that they were happy the road had been awarded on contract and thanked the Government for ensuring that economic activities in the area were not brought to a halt.
