The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has turned down request by residents and opinion leaders to lift the Old Tafo curfew militating against economic activities there.
Giving update about the situation at the area on Wednesday February 24, 2016, TV3’s William Inkoom gathered that REGSEC was not satisfied with the level of security there yet.
The security council imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on residents of Old Tafo following violent clashes between traditional authorities and Muslim youth over the fencing of a cemetery on February 10. The curfew was later reviewed to 8pm to 4am.
In the wake of the clashes, a number of properties were destroyed including over 200 cars. Several persons were also maimed.
Heavily armed police cum military personnel were deployed to the area to quell the conflict and maintain peace and order.
A seeming calm has returned to the area necessitating calls for the removal of the curfew that has seriously affected business there.
But for REGSEC, it is too early to consider lifting the curfew when security situation there still remains fluid.
Meanwhile, some youth that prevented the security council from visiting the palace of the Chief Imam there in the heat of the conflict have been arrested, William Inkoom reported.
