Cape Coast, July 31, GNA – Supplementary registration of fresh eligible voters, including people who have turned 18 years, commenced on Thursday at all 252 centres in the Central Region. A visit to some of the centres in Cape Coast and Elmina revealed that the two main political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were the only parties with representatives watching the exercise.
At the Philip Quaicoe Boys’ Centre, the registration officer, Mr Mensah Atta, said the exercise delayed for about an hour because some party agents were late. Seven persons had been registered when the GNA got there at 0910 hours, and there was a long queue of others waiting for their turn.
At the Adisadel Health Centre, where six persons had been registered, the registration officer, Mr Ahmed Tijani explained that a girl, who would turn 18 in October, insisted she should be registered as she would be eligible to vote in December. She was however not registered because she was not yet 18. Mr Tijani appealed to the Commission to take such cases into consideration in future because the lady’s argument was valid. A total of 30 persons had been registered when the GNA got to the Amanful Catholic, Gegem Twi-Nndzi-Twi, Ntsin Legion Hall, Metropolitan Assembly-Kadadwen and the AME Zion centres between 0815 hours and 0936 hours.
The registration officer at the AME Zion Centre at Aboom, Mr Yaw Effah, told the GNA that one person who was challenged by a party agent for being under-aged was turned away, and that 19 people had so far been registered.
At the Pedu Primary School Centre, 10 people registered as at 1003 hours, 20 at the Kakumdo M/A primary school centre, and 10 at the Abura Catholic Primary school centre by 1012 hours. At the Seaview/Liverpool centre in Elmina, 19 persons registered as at 1120 hours, and 17, 22 and 18 were registered at Bantuma, Court and Akotobinsin centres respectively between 1132 hours and midday. There was however no sign of registration officials at the Nkontrodo and Boham House centres. Residents told the GNA that the two centres had been relocated. 31 July 08
