Ketan (W/R) Feb 26, GNA – Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, on Saturday renewed calls to students to be disciplined and to focus on their studies to enable them to contribute to national development in future. He made the call at the Open Day of the Ahantaman Secondary School and the Homecoming celebration of the Old Students Association of the School at Ketan near Sekondi.
The occasion was under the theme, “Together We Build a Holistic Community”. Mr Aidoo who is an old student of the School urged students “To eschew the bad behaviour that are unfortunately becoming a feature of students in some high Secondary School”. He added, “The way you dress, and walk, the music you prefer most and the way you dance sometimes in even Churches inform us about the crop of students that are turning out from our schools”. Mr Aidoo said the use of hard drugs had destroyed the future of many people who would have become geniuses and great men and women.
Mr Aidoo said the best thing to do about drugs was to avoid them altogether and not to think of experimenting on them because even a first taste of some drugs could get one addicted. He noted that despite many instances of indiscipline recorded in schools, there were still a good number of students that were well behaved and very focused on their studies. Mr Aidoo urged such students not to relent in their efforts to attain excellence but to strive even when the environment in which they found themselves was not conducive. He promised to make a personal contribution of five million cedis towards the celebration and said the Regional Coordinating Council would present a set of computer with printer and accessories to the headmistress and two 20 inch coloured television sets for the boys and girls dormitories.
Mrs Evelyn Osei, Headmistress said the youth must understand that there was no alternative to hard work if they wanted to be “achievers”. She appealed to students to eschew laziness and to work hard and “Not to chase after leaked questions or Apo” but to cultivate a good reading habit. Mrs Osei said active engagement in co-curricular activities like sports and games would go a long way to help students put some of their energy to good use.
