Regional conference of Science Teachers opens in Koforidua

Koforidua, Feb. 26, GNA – Mrs Christiana Boateng, New Juaben Municipal Director of Education, has called on teachers to take advantage of information technology to improve learning schemes, as well as enhance economic opportunities of their students. She held that the advent of Information and Communication Technology had made access to knowledge a vital force for transforming social, economic and political life globally. Mrs Boateng said this at the opening of the Eastern Regional Conference of the Ghana Association of Science Teachers in Koforidua on Thursday.

The three-day conference, which was under the theme: “Developing the Human Resources for the Oil Industry – Implications for Science and Technology Education,” attracted more than 300 teachers from the region. Mrs Boateng said science and technology were vital for the development of every nation and called for heavy investments in the area to propel least developed countries to catch up with richer nations. She said it was important to encourage the youth to study science in order to man Ghana’s emerging oil industry to support the growth of the economy.

Mrs Boateng said the various products derived from petroleum could provide a sustainable source of employment for the youth if they are given the appropriate training in science and technology. She also warned the nation to be mindful of the associated challenges of science and technology such as cyber fraud and the proliferation of pornographic materials on the internet and take steps to check them.
