Refuse Piles Up In Accra

….COLLECTING AGENCIES ON VACATION?

Refuse collecting agencies in many parts of Accra appear to have gone on holiday over the Christmas period as evidenced by the mounting piles of refuse in many parts of the city. A number of places in Accra visited revealed how appalling the situation is.

In and around Dansoman Estate, for instance, refuse has not been collected for days. As at around 12.30 p.m. yesterday, refuse generated before, during and after Christmas could be seen in front of houses awaiting collection. A resident of Dansoman Zodiac, told GHANAIAN TIMES that although each house pays ?60,000 a month for refuse collection the agencies do not collect the garbage on a regular basis.

At the Kaneshie lorry park, three refuse containers which have not been emptied for the past three days were overflowing.

At the Agbogbloshie market all gutters were choked with refuse. Refuse containers which have not been lifted for over a week were overflowing with garbage.

However, food items such as kenkey, fried yam and cooked rice were on sale near the filthy gutters and being bought and eaten by passers-by
