A doctor has urged midwives and nurses in-charge of health facilities to refer cases beyond their competence to medical officers without delay to save lives in the communities.
Some of the cases include anaemia in pregnancy, hypertension state in pregnancy, diabetes mellitus in pregnancy and bleeding and vagina discharge in pregnancy.
Dr Christian Coompson, Medical Officer at the Nkoranza Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital, advised them to prepare detailed and accurate reports on the referral cases, since verbal statements might not contain all the health records on patients.
Dr Coompson made the call at a workshop for 40 health workers from the Nkoranza Municipal Directorate of Ghana Health Service, held at Nkoranza.
It was to review activities of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), Nutrition Surveillance, Family Planning and Antenatal clinics.
He announced the hospital management has arranged with other medical specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology for treatment on Wednesdays and Fridays, and patients with problems should keep the days in mind to receive the necessary attention.
Madam Winifred Tienaah, Nkoranza Municipal Director of Health Services, urged the participants to exchange ideas to improve on their knowledge and skills.
She advised them to liaise with the Community-Based Surveillance Volunteers, for readily available information on health issues in the communities, and address them promptly.
She also urged health workers to encourage the people to embrace the family planning programme, to control unwanted pregnancies, and safeguard against illegal and unsafe abortions among the youth in the communities.
Madam Sakim Sayibu, Nkoranza Municipal Nutrition Officer, advised pregnant women to visit ante-natal clinics as scheduled, for them to receive the necessary attention on their health and their babies.
