Reduce Number of Cabinet Ministers – Bagbin

The Minority Leader Alban Bagbin has called on the President to consider cutting down the size of his government.

The last NPP administration had a total of 80 ministers, which Mr. Bagbin says ought to be pruned.

He also advocated the need to set limits for the number of ministerial appointments to be made by the President.

?I have seen quite a long list of ministers in today?s newspapers and that the issue of cabinet ministers was fixed by the Constitution for it to be not more than 19?, he said.

Mr. Bagbin again complained about the creation of more ministries which now stand at 23 and the appointment of between two to three deputy ministers, Special Assistants and Spokespersons.

The NPP?s last administration also saw the creation of new ministries such as the Private Sector Development, the Ports, Harbours and Railways and a merger of two previous ministries Youth & Sports and Education among others.

The minority leader told Joy News that in most cases it was obvious that jobs were being created for the boys

?If we are to go by the 19 ministers as required by the constitution, at least one or two could be added?. He also said the creation of ministries such as Ports and Harbours was unnecessary. ?It was part of Roads and Transport.,? he said.
