Red Cross Demand Security For Its Workers At Refugee Camp

Accra, (Greater Accra) 22 Sept., The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) today said until the security of its workers are guaranteed, it will not return to the Sanzule Camp, near Eikwe in the Western Region, housing Liberian and Sierra Leonean refugees. The GRCS withdrew its services to the camp last Wednesday following an attack on its officials and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). During the disturbances, enraged refugees charged on GRCS’s workers, threatened the life of a UNHCR representative and made away with communication equipment belonging to GRCS and electric bulbs. In an interview with the GNA in Accra today, Mr. Sulley Sumani, GRCS Co-ordinator for Disaster, said a report from the camp showed that the main issue which brought about the disturbance was the distribution of vegetable oil, drugs and the re-registration of about 300 Liberian refugees who returned from their country after voting. Mr. Sumani said when the 300 refugees went home to vote, they gave their food rationing tickets to their colleagues who thought they were entitled to double rations of whatever was distributed. He said the GRCS asked the remaining refugees to give their names and families they belonged to in order not rpt not to get double rations of the food but they refused. They even refused to collect their portions for June and when the 300 returned and were also asked to re-register without which it would be assumed that they had not returned, they too refused.
