The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost Apostle Dr Opoku-Onyinah has appealed to the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to reconsider its decision to ban churches in the area from holding church services in classrooms.
In his view, it is better to have church activities in the classrooms than for people to “drink and do other bad things in there”.
A statement signed by the Educational Director of the STMA, Franklin Dzigbede cautioned the heads of schools in the metropolis against giving out their premises for church activities.
According to the Ghana Education Service, the use of classrooms by churches has led to the destruction of school properties and the disruption of academic work.
Commenting on the development, the Pentecost Chairman told Journalists in Kumasi the decision appears harsh.
“If people will meet in classrooms and teach the word of God and pray, I think it’s better than for people to use the classrooms for drinking and other social activities that are not very good”.
He said the Assembly must find means to dialogue with the churches to come to an agreement on how they can help maintain the school facilities.
