Reckless driving must not be part of celebrations-NRSC

Mr Sebastian Akyeampong, Volta Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, (NRSC) Monday reminded politicians of the need to uphold road safety regulations as they celebrate Friday’s general election.

“You must be alive to win more elections and implement your policies and programmes,” he stated.

Mr Akyeampong said this in an interview with the GNA in Ho and expressed disappointment that immediately the Electoral Commission (EC) announced winners of the parliamentary and presidential elections, party activists drove and rode motor bicycles carelessly on the streets endangering lives.

He appealed to political party heads to prevail upon their supporters and sympathizers to be moderate and responsible in their celebrations.

He said though no major road crashes had been recorded, it was important to caution political party activists.

Mr Akyeampong, particularly, criticised overloading of vehicles and party activists riding in buckets of pickups.

He said he also unhappy about the usage of political party paraphernalia in branding vehicles because they cover side mirrors and affect the concentration of drivers.

Mr Akyeampong urged personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service to be vigilant and not compromise the law on persons and groups who violate road traffic regulations.

Last week, the NRSC regional office in Ho presented sets of road crossing aids to some basic schools in town to improve “school child safety on the road”.
