Asamankese, (E/R), Aug. 31, GNA – Joseph Tweneboah, a professional driver, who drove his vehicle recklessly and ran into another vehicle injuring five passengers in that vehicle has been fined two million cedis by the Asamankese Circuit court.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of driving without due care and attention and negligently causing harm to one Joseph Kwao and four others.
Detective Inspector J.F. Idan told the court that Tweneboah drives a Bedford truck No. GV 4034 D and on March 13, at about Mawusi Ebenezer was a driving Daewoo Leman taxicab from Asamankese to Suhum with passengers on board whilst Tweneboah was also driving his truck from a minor road to join the main Asamankese – Suhum motor road.
On reaching the junction, Tweneboah, who had to stop for the incoming vehicle to pass before joining the main road failed to do so and in the process the taxicab, which was closer and could not do anything, ran into the truck.
The passengers on board the taxicab, including the driver sustained injuries and were rushed to the Asamankese Government hospital for treatment.
The Judge, Mr S. S. Appiah deplored the behaviour of Tweneboah and sentenced him to a fine of two million cedis or nine months in prison each on the two counts with the sentences to run concurrently. He also ordered that Tweneboah’s licence be impounded for six months.
If during that period the accused drove a vehicle he would go to prison for nine months in hard labour.
