Readwide clubs inaugurated in Fanteakwa

Begoro, July 13, GNA – Forty Readwide Clubs were inaugurated in the Fanteakwa District on Friday to help pupils in basic schools to cultivate the habit of reading and speaking the English language. The District Director of Education for Fanteakwa, Mr Stephen Peter-Andoh, inaugurated the clubs at separate ceremonies at Begoro, Bosuso, Osino and Heman.

He said some pupils failed the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) mainly because of their inability to read and understand the English language.

Mr Peter Andoh called on individuals and organisations; especially old students’ associations to donate reading books to the clubs. He also asked teachers to recommend pupils who have mental or physical handicap in reading to their parents to send them for medical treatment.

The District Co-ordinator of Readwide Club, Mr Eric Twumasi, asked the pupils not to read textbooks and other printed material in English. He said efforts were been made to contact the Readwide Books, the Afram Publications and the EPP Books to supply more supplementary books to the clubs.

Mr Twumasi appealed to organisations to adopt school libraries in the district and furnish them with books.
