Re-emergence of threats not good for Ghana’s democracy – Akufo-Addo

Takoradi, Dec. 22, GNA – Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate on Monday said the re-emergence of intimidation, threats, use of abusive language and destruction of private property was not a healthy sign for Ghana’s infant democracy. He said Ghana’s democracy must be safeguarded and urged Ghanaians to resist any attempt to re-introduce any form of violence after the December 28 run-off.

Nana Akufo-Addo made the observation at a press conference in Takoradi to expressing appreciation to supporters and sympathisers who voted for NPP on December 7.

He said it was unfortunate that some radio stations were deliberately inciting some ethnic groups against each other which had the tendency to divide the nation.

On assets declaration by public officials, Nana Akufo-Addo said the law should be reviewed to make it possible for every public official to declare assets before assumption and after tenure of office.

“I believe in public declaration of assets and all public officials expected to declare assets, must do so voluntarily”.

He pointed out that the revised law must focus on the individual and all enforcement agencies should have the mandate to effectively perform their functions without any interference.

Nana Akufo-Addo said such institutions must be adequately resourced to perform their duties and enforce laws in the country.

“No enforcement agency must work at the directive of the Presidency, they should be innovative, work on their own accord and recommend appropriate sanctions where necessary,” he said. Nana Akufo-Addo appealed to Ghanaians to vote massively for the NPP in the December 28 run-off to enable them contribute their quota towards the country’s development. 22 Dec. 08
