Re-allocate deserted stalls at Kantamanto, AMA urged

Accra, Oct 20, GNA – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has been asked to reallocate about 800 deserted stalls at the Kantamanto Market in the central business area of Accra.

Madam Mary Deidei Tagoe, spokesperson of Kantamanto Market Food-sellers Association, made the appeal at a meeting by members in Accra on Monday. She said that out of 920 stalls allocated to traders between 2003 and this year, only 100 were being occupied by the original owners and alleged that some of them were selling on the streets while others had rented their stalls without informing AMA or the association.

Madam Tagoe also supposed that chop-bars in the market had been rented to hairdressers, violating the agreement of the association. She explained that the agreement prevented original owners of stalls from reallocating them without the consent of the association and also banned them from cooking and setting fire at the market. Mr Samuel Adorsu Mensah, a caretaker of the market, urged AMA to consider the request of the association to help rid the streets of Accra of hawkers.

Mr Nii Dodoo Dodoo, a member of the AMA said that he would take the matter up with the authorities and advised original owners of the stalls to reclaim them before AMA took any action.
