Arusha — The former Head of State of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, on Tuesday visited the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha.
Rawlings told journalists he had “no objection” to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) being used to try alleged perpetrators of atrocities in the Darfur region of Sudan upon the completion of its mandate in 2008.
“So long as the instruments do exist both in terms of machinery and personnel to ensure fair justice is done, I have no problem with wherever these courts are held,” added Jerry Rawlings.
He commended the ICTR, saying, “so far the records here have been quite impressive” and the speed in adjudicating the trials has increased.
The former Ghanaian head of State visited the ICTR during part of his visit to Tanzania as a special envoy for the United Nations for HIV/AIDS.
The US administration recently proposed the establishment of an African War Crimes Tribunal (AWCT) to try the atrocities committed in Darfur, which it has described as genocide. The issue is still under discussion.
