Rawlings to address 31st December Revolution anniversary

Former President Jerry John Rawlings is scheduled to address the 35th anniversary of the December 31 Revolution that ushered in the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

A wreath-laying ceremony and parade has been scheduled to be held at the Revolutionary Square in Accra on Saturday, December 31. The theme for this year’s ceremony is ‘31st December – The Principles Never Change’.

Leading cadres of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), formed in 1992 out of the PNDC, are expected to address the gathering.

The revolution in 1981 ousted the Dr Hilla Limann government, which had won elections two years earlier after the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) ensured a return to democratic rule.

It was led by Mr Rawlings, then a Flight Lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force. Saturday’s ceremony is expected to be short and solemn, according to a release from the Planning Committee.

Reports say the founder of the NDC, Mr Rawlings, could use the opportunity to outline the causes of the loss of the party in the recently held elections.
