The District chief executive officer for Bongo in the Upper East Region, Mr. Clement Atikiya has confirmed on assault on him late yesterday at Bongo by some NDC fanatics when he drove through the crowd, but said ex-president Rawlings did not beat him, as has been reported. Mr. Atikiya told peacefm that he was returning from a social function when he met the crowd being addressed by the ex-president.
The DCE said after honking for a while, the crowd who had then occupied almost the entire road gave him way to pass. He said when he got to the middle of the crowd, he was refused passage and heard sudden attacks on his car, including the smashing of his side of the door.
According to him the ex-president drew closer to him, held his shoulders and shook him shouting if he wanted to kill people. He then pulled himself from the ex-president?s hands, and went into his car, resulting in the smashing of his door by one of Mr. Rawlings? aides, which made him sustain a cut on his forehead.
The DCE claimed that there was no other alternative route he could use, apart from the one between the Catholic Church and the post office in the area. Later in an interview, the NDC MP for Bongo, Mr. Albert Abongo, said the DCE showed total arrogance to the charged crowed who were attentively listening to the founder of their party. The MP said although the ex-president went close to the DCE?s car, he did not touch him. However reports monitored on other networks in Accra which the ex-president spoke to say Mr. Rawlings admitted touching the DCE.
