Accra, Sept. 23, GNA- The mortal remains of the late Reginald Nii Adjei- Boye Sekan, former MP for the Ledzokuku Constituency and Presidential Staffer was buried at the Teshie Pentecostal Cemetery, after a funeral attended by a large crowd or mourners, including former President Jerry John Rawlings.
In a tribute former President Rawlings urged faithful of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be vanguards of truth and honesty to protect the integrity of the nation and the party. The late Reginald Nii Adjei- Boye Sekan died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on August 6, 2006, at the age of 47.
The funeral, held at the Teshie Gonnor Methodist School Park, at Teshie near Accra, also attracted former Vice President John Atta-Milss as well as other leading members of the NDC.
President Rawlings said, “it is sad to note that some cadres who had spent years of dedicated and humble service with no thought of reward suddenly, on becoming MP’s became pompous, even arrogant, and obsessively concerned with allowances, cars and accommodation.” He said however that, ” Nii was not like that. What mattered to him was the work, which needed to be done. He remained the same modest, principled young man, approachable to people from all walks of life” The former President described the death of Nii Sekan as a loss to Ghana, the people of Ledzokuku and his family.
” In his relatively short life, he made a very significant contribution to our nation’s political and social development”, Flt Lt Rawlings said. The body of the late MP placed in designer casket in the form of a jet was later taken to the Teshie Pentecostal Cemetery for burial. The large crowd at the funeral and the procession from the funeral grounds created a heavy traffic jam from the Tsui Bleo Road to the Accra Tema Main Road.
The Nii Sekan left behind a wife and two boys.
Nii Adjei-Boye Sekan was one of the original cadres of the 31st December Revolution.
He served other capacities as a Member of the National Investigation Timber Sub-Committee under the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), helping to uncover abuses and illegalities in the timber industry, and the Regional Organising Assistant for the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR) for the Greater Accra Region.
With the promulgation of the 1992 Constitution, Nii Sekan threw himself into the organizational work for the NDC, becoming the first Regional Party Secretary for the Greater Accra Region an the MP for Ledzokuku Constituency for two terms.
