The Kumasi Rattray Park, one of Ghana’s modern amusement and recreational facilities in the Ashanti Region, has been opened to the public a day after it was closed down by officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority amidst allegations of tax evasion.
Personnel from the Asokwa office of the GRA on Friday September 23 stormed the park, drove workers and patrons out, closed the gates, and sealed it with the commissioner’s tape.
Former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) boss Kojo Bonsu who spearheaded the re-development of the park, named it after Captain Robert Rattray, a Scotsman who was the Assistant Colonial Secretary in the Gold Coast and clerk to the Legislative Assembly of Accra in 1919.
Class News’ Ashanti regional correspondent, Hafiz Tijani, reported that management of the park had agreed with officials from the GRA to open the park while they go through the process to pay their taxes and register the park as a business entity. Hafiz added that patrons had stormed the park to enjoy their weekend.
