Rainstorm renders 500 people homeless at Sefwi-Bekwai

Bibiani (W/R), Feb. 13, GNA – A severe rainstorm that hit Sefwi-Bekwai in the Western Region, on Monday, destroyed more than 105 houses and rendered 500 people homeless. The roofs of the Pentecost Church, Presbyterian Church, Baptist Church and the Sefwi Bekwai D/A Primary School were completely ripped off.

Mr. Ofori Asumani, the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), made these known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sefwi Bekwai, on Tuesday. He appealed to individuals and organisations to assist the affected people, who according to him, were residing with friends and relatives, with relief items.

Mr. Ofori Asumani attributed the destruction of the buildings in the storm to poor maintenance and the use of inferior materials for their construction. He appealed to the people to plant more trees in the township to serve as windbreaks to prevent disasters. Meanwhile, personnel from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and NADMO in the district have visited the town to assess the situation and to express their sympathies to the victims.
