Rainstorm kills 3 women in Walewale, hundreds displaced

Three market women have been confirmed dead in a ferocious rainstorm which hit Walewale in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern region around 6pm on March 18, 2013.

The ferocious storm also knocked down communications masts belonging to mobile telephone company Vodafone and a local radio Station called Eagle FM.

A presenter of the station, Mashood Umar, confirmed to XYZ News that the storm has devastated most parts of Walewale.

The storm came in the wake of similar devastating storms which hit parts of the same region a few weeks ago.

Areas including Tamale, Gushiegu, Milon, Yendi, Zabzugu, Tatale, Savelugu/Nanton Sabola and their environs were all declared as disaster zones by the Defence and Interior Ministry following the tempestuous storms which ravaged those places.

Some lives were lost and massive destruction caused to property running into millions of Ghana cedis.

The Security Agencies and National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) were directed to ensure that urgent and necessary action was taken to preserve life and property as well as assist disaster victims.

The ministry also noted that “urgent steps were being taken to channel emergency supplies to the disaster victims”.

The latest storm disaster in Walewale in the same region is set to worsen the situation of the hundreds displaced by previous storms.
