Rainstorm Destroys Kwapong

PROPERTIES WORTH thousands of Ghana cedis have been destroyed after two successive rainstorms hit Kwapong near Sankore in the Asunafo South district of the Brong Ahafo region.

The heavy downpour which lasted for over nine hours caused extensive damage to buildings and shops at the market area after overflowing rain water from the deep gutter in the middle of the town flooded most of the homes nearby.

Over 110 people have been displaced while more than 35 houses have collapsed

As at the time of filing this report, the victims were putting up with their relations and friends while waiting for government support.

The Assemblyman for Kwapong Newtown, Justice Kwaku Boampong aka Parabola told DAILY GUIDE that the May 26 and June 7 rainstorms displaced a number of residents and swept away several properties.

He stated that the rains started at about 3:30pm that day and ended the next day. The second one that occurred two weeks later lasted for only one hour. Both rainstorms caused extensive damage to properties in area.

According to him, he has since reported the incident to the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) district office at Kukuom but they are yet to receive any form of humanitarian support from them.

Mr. Boampong attributed the cause of the flooding to a huge gully in the middle of the town, which he noted, has been left unattended to for some years now.

He also took a swipe at the contractor who constructed the road accusing him of constructing narrow gutters which cannot contain water anytime it rains heavily.

He therefore appealed to government to urgently do something about that gully which is causing havoc to life and property anytime it rains in the area.
