Rainstorm destroys 70 houses at Nweneso No. I

Kuntanase (Ash), July 15, GNA – Seventy houses and six electricity poles at Nweneso No I in the Atwima Kwanwoma District were destroyed when a rainstorm hit the community on Tuesday night. Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Kuntanase on Wednesday Mr Daniel Asuo-Afram, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator for Bosomtwe and Atwima Kwanwoma districts, said scores of people have been rendered homeless and are putting up with relatives and friends.

Items destroyed include electrical gadgets, cooking utensils, furniture, books and clothing. Mr Asuo-Afram said the regional secretariat had been able to mobilize 10 packets of roofing sheets, some bags of rice and plastic for the victims.

He appealed to non governmental organizations and individuals to assist the victims because they would need a lot of help which cannot be provided by the government alone. He said since the entire Atwima Kwanwoma area was prone to rainstorm, there was the need for the chiefs and people in the area to plant trees around their communities to protect them from such disasters. Mr Asuo-Afram said last year, NADMO planted 3,000 teak and acacia trees in 25 schools in the two districts as part of its plans to plant trees in 50 schools.
