Rainstorm causes havoc at Yendi

Yendi, May 20, GNA – A rainstorm that hit Yendi and parts of the Northern Region on Wednesday destroyed several houses, kiosks, and Volta River Authority (VRA) transformers.

A tree fell on a VRA low electricity transmission pole, disrupting Ghana Broadcasting Corporation television and radio transmissions in the eastern corridor.

The Yendi Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Mr. Bigah Kofi, the Yendi Municiapal Chief Executive, Mr. Zakaria Issah and the Yendi Municipal Coordinating Director, Alhaji Kadri Shehu, visited the affected areas.

Mr. Kofi said at Zugu in Yendi, 11 had their roofs ripped off rendering more than 40 people homeless. A block of three classrooms at Bofoyili also had its roofs ripped off.

The Assistant Station Supervisor of the Yendi VRA, Mr. Fredrick Kojo Owusu, said a tree fell on the VRA 15mm square aluminium conductor and destroyed it and some low electricity tension poles.

The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Zakaria, expressed concern about people using inferior wood to roof their houses and that this was the reason why a lot of houses had their roofs ripped off.

He appealed to the people of Zugu to help accommodate those who have been displaced.
