Asamankese, 8 June — Asamankese experienced its heaviest rainfall in over a decade on Tuesday with the resultant floods damaging more than 100 houses. The meteorological services department recorded 109.2 millimetres of rainfall. About 3,000 people were affected by the four-hour rainfall in which a dozen people were injured and nearly 2,000 were rendered homeless. Two women whose condition was serious are on admission at the Asamankese government hospital. The Abuchen river which flows through the town flooded its banks and compounded the situation by the flood entering nearby homes. Items such as television and radio sets, cooking utensils, furniture, and other household items and livestock were carried away by the floods. It is alleged that some people took advantage of the disaster to steal as some people posed as ”good Samaritans” land pretended to be helping the victims to salvage their properties. The areas affected most were Abaase, water and sewerage corporation (GWSC) offices and pumping station, the estates, Jamestown, Asamankesewa and Amanfrom number one. The flooding of the premises of the GWSC is likely to affect water supply in the township for some days, officials of the corporation said. Some dignitaries in the town toured the affected areas to assess extent of damage to property.
