Rain wrecks havoc to Winneba AME Zion School

Winneba (C/R), June 20, GNA – Properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis belonging to students of the A.M.E.Zion Senior High Girls School, were destroyed by flood following a heavy downpour, which hit Winneba and its surrounding communities on Saturday dawn. The items include exercise books, textbooks, food items, school uniforms, and other personal effects. The headmistress of the school, Reverend Helena Swanzy Essien made this known to the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Nii Ephraim and Mr Francis Ato Doughan Municipal coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) when they visited the place to assess the extent of damage.

Rev. Essien said the water entered the school dormitories and swept some of the students’ properties away but there were no casualties. She said the school wall was also partly damaged adding that authorities of the school have currently provided a temporal wooden fence. Rev. Essien attributed the flood to the poor drainage system behind the school block she said could not contain the volume of water that came from the heavy down pour. She appealed to the Municipal Assembly to construct a bigger drainage to forestall any future occurrence.

The rain, which came with storms, also destroyed fishing nets and canoes at the beach, damaged a portion of road at Penkye as well as the Liberation Square wall near the University of Education. Mr Francis Doughan said that his outfit would liaise with the Municipal Assembly to assist the victims.
