Rabies on increase in Sunyani

Sunyani, Feb 12, GNA – Cases of dog bites and rabies are on the increase in Sunyani Municipality and the Municipal Health Directorate has advised dog keepers to vaccinate their pets.

Dr David A. Opare, Municipal Director of Health Services, who
said this in a statement after a review meeting of the Municipal Health Directorate, advised the public to report immediately at the hospital for anti rabies vaccination when there is a dog bite.

He said six persons out of seven rabies cases recorded in the municipality last year died. Dr Opare said a total of 128,371 patients patronized health facilities in the municipality, showing an increase of five per cent over the previous year’s.
He said there would be a mass distribution of drugs for the prevention of elephantiasis in the municipality. Psychiatric diseases were on the increase amongst women, contributing to 67 per cent of the total cases reported last year.
