Accra, Oct. 28, GNA – The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has inaugurated eight 10,000 litres storage tanks, under a pro-poor water project at Teshie in the Greater Accra Region to ease the perennial water problem in the area.
The project, which is part of the urban water project of the World Bank, is being undertaken by the Commission in collaboration with the Ghana Water Company, Aqua Vitens Rand and Water Aid, an international non-governmental organisation.
It aims at ensuring the provision and supply of potable water to poor and low income households.
The PURC in July this year assisted Glefe, a community in Accra with seven stand pipes under the pro-poor water project. Mr Stephen Adu, Executive Secretary of PURC, said the success of the pilot scheme would ensure replication in other deprived communities. He said due to non-availability of water through the taps, the storage tanks would be supplied via water tankers. “These tanks will also be connected to the system as soon as water flow to the area has been restored,” he said. Mr Adu said the Nima community, which is also part of the pilot project, is likely to benefit before the close of the year. Nii Okai Kotei, Director of PURC said the project which would be owned by the community and managed by a water board.
