Pupils observe first day in School at Wa

Wa, Sept 19, GNA – Primary class one pupils of some schools in the Wa Municipality on Tuesday had the rare opportunity of interacting with top government officials in the region when they visited the schools to welcome and celebrate their first day in school with them. Mr Ambrose Dery, the Upper West Regional Minister, who led the team of officials that included, Mr Mac Adams Banda, Wa Municipal Chief Executive and Mr Cletus Paaga, the Regional Director of Education, distributed soft drinks and sweets to the pupils in all the schools they visited.

Schools whose children enjoyed the special treat were Wa Municipal Model Primary, Catholic Primary, Fongo Primary and Tendamba Primary schools.

During the unannounced visit, the Regional Minister and his entourage had to be kept waiting because some of the schools had not yet enrolled children for primary class one. At the Catholic Primary where there was no child in class one, the head teacher of the school explained that he had not yet received the list of the pupils from the School’s kindergarten. This incensed the Regional Director of Education and some of his subordinates in the entourage who threatened the Head Teacher with sanctions for apparent dereliction of duty. The pupils were therefore brought from the Kindergarten class to be served with the drinks and have an interaction with the Regional Minister.

Tendamba Primary School also recorded a similar scenario where the Kindergarten class had to be used because there were no pupils in primary class one at the time of the visit and the Head Teacher attributed it to an early morning heavy downpour. Mr Dery advised the pupils to be punctual at school and learn hard to become doctors, lawyers, teachers and leaders in future. 19 Sept 06
