The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Nana Owusu Nsiah III has instructed police at Berekum to arrest schoolchildren found loitering or riding bicycle during school hours in the town.
Speaking at the fourth speech and prize-giving day celebration of Berekum Secondary School at the weekend, the IGP said any school child caught in the act without any tangible reason would be arrested and punished in accordance with the local District Assembly by-laws.Nana Nsiah, who is also Maawerehene of Berekum Traditional Area said the measure was part of steps taken by the District Assembly and some opinion leaders in the area to reverse the fallen standard of education in the district, especially at the basic level.
Nana Nsiah said he learnt with shock last year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results and found that there was the need to reverse the trend.
He urged parents to play their roles effectively by supplying the educational needs of their children to enhance teaching and learning.
On the recent police recruitment exercise in Brong-Ahafo the IGP said certificates of majority of the applicants showed weak performance that did not measure up to expectation.
