Pupils clean communities to mark Universal Children’s Day

Pupils of the Nuriya Central Islamic Primary School in Tamale on Wednesday undertook a clean-up exercise at Hausa Zongo and Bulpela communities in the Metropolis.

The pupils swept the communities and desilted gutters.

The exercise, organized by the Regional Advisory Information and Network Systems (RAINS), an NGO in collaboration with Zoomlion Waste Management Company, formed part of activities to mark Universal Children’s Day of the United Nations, celebrated globally on November 20.

It also formed part of activities to mark 20th anniversary of the establishment of RAINS, a Tamale-based development-oriented organization working to promote education as well as welfare of children.

Mrs Mavis Kotoka, Human Resource and Training Officer of RAINS, said the objective of the exercise was to inculcate the habit of cleaning one’s surroundings in the children to avoid preventable diseases such as malaria.

She said when children clean the environment it would send positive signals to other members of society about the need to be health-conscious and take appropriate measures such as cleaning their surroundings to stay healthy.

Mr Braimah Salifu Lange, teacher at Nuriya Central Islamic Primary School who led the pupils to undertake the exercise, said the school would re-activate its Environmental Club to periodically undertake clean-up exercises within the community.
