Punish corrupt officials – Prof. Ayee

A senior fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Professor Joseph R.A. Ayee has stated that corruption must be made

a high-risk activity, thus punishment should be used as a deterrent, irrespective of the social status of the culprit.

According to him, the war against corruption has had a positive impact in countries where the top leaders actually led the fight.

Prof Ayee made this recommendation when he was speaking at the Ghana policy dialogue series organised by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), under the theme ‘Anti-Corruption Measures in Ghana: An Analysis of the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP)’.

He added that the private sector has a strong moral duty to support the fight against corruption as it is often the supply side of corruption opportunities.

He mentioned that one of the ways to fight the canker is the establishment of a comprehensive awareness campaign that is supported with education and training.

The professor also called for the compulsory inclusion of corruption and anti-corruption of good governance in the learning curricula in all schools and centres of learning and training from primary through to tertiary level.

“The fight against corruption through sensitisation of the young must be given priority,” he said.

He added that the delay in the passage of the Right of Information Bill and inadequate public awareness have been some of the major challenges of NACAP.
