Public urged to integrate blind in social functions

Ajumako (C/R), July 26, GNA – Mr Kenneth Obempong, the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District Chief Executive, has appealed to organisations and families to support the blind to enable them contribute to the development of the nation.

Mr Obempong made the appeal when he opened a workshop on “Community Based Rehabilitation Project for the Blind”, for assembly members and heads of department in the district.

The workshop was organised by the Ghana Association of the Blind (GAB) to sensitise the participants on the project aimed at reducing the level of dependency of the blind.

Under the project, the association would offer the blind free eye testing, entrepreneurial skills as well as conduct training in mobility and give them financial support to set up income generating ventures. Mr Obempong said the days when the blind was regarded as useless was a thing of the past and suggested that, they should be given training to be self reliant instead of giving them alms.

Mr Frederick Ofosu, project co-ordinator of the association appealed to the public to give the blind equal treatment and opportunities just like the sighted persons.
